From Summit Lake the road takes you to the south and starts climbing sharply. To the
east you can look down at Denver and the see the downtown buildings on a clear day.
You start to get a real perspective of how high you are. After a few hair-pin turns,
you go around a corner and an absolutely amazing view opens up. You can see a long
run of peaks stretching as far as you can see. Below you can see highway 285 and
Kenosha pass and beyond that a great view of South Park. This stretch is by far the most
winding and steep of the whole road. You just go higher and higher and start to lose
track of normal reality. It is literally like going to a different world. All
you can see are peaks and sky. If it is cloudy, sometimes you get treated to being
above the clouds and that just blows my mind.
It is about here that the lack of oxygen starts kicking in. Personally, I kind of
get a little short of breath and little high. It adds to the fun. And with
some good tunes playing - it's definitely out of this world.
When you get near the top, you feel like you are on top of the world. You can
look down and see the switch backs and cliffs that you were just on. How they built
a road on the mountain is amazing to me. Finally, you reach the parking lot at the
top.
